The meaning of Tongkat Ali is “Ali’s walking stick” in the Malay language. It indicates the ability of the shrub to promote energy, vitality, and improve resistance. Tongkat Ali coffee is a very popular drink in Malaysia. It is usually made from selected coffee beans, sugar, and non dairy creamer mixed with Tongkat Ali root.

| Satay |

Satay is a popular dish in Malaysia of marinated, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce. Satay may consist of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef, pork, fish. Skewers are made from the midrib of the coconut palm frond or bamboo.


The disk is considered as the national dish of Malaysia. Its name is a Malay word that means “fatty rice.” The rice is soaked in coconut cream along with cucumber slices, fried anchovies, roasted peanuts, and hot spicy sauce are wrapped in banana leaves.

Kuih is a fairy broad term which may include items that are called cakes, cookies, pudding, biscuit in English and are made from rice. The most common flavoring ingredients are grated coconut, coconut cream, and palm sugar.


Roti canai is a type of flatbread. “Roti” means bread in Hindi and “canai” means “to knead” in Malay. The mixture of dough, egg, flour and water is kneaded, flattened, oiled, and folded repeatedly. Roti canai is cooked on a flat iron skillet with a lot of oil and eaten with curry.

| Teh tarik |

Teh tarik (literally “pulling tea”) is a tea beverage. The mixture of tea and milk is poured back and forth repeatedly between two vessels giving it a thick foam top. There are occasions in Malaysia where brewers gather for competitions to show their skills.


Bak-kut-teh is a soup popularly served in Malaysia. This dish consists of meaty pork ribs simmered with various herbs and spices (including garlic, cinnamon, star anise and mushroom) for hours.

| Chili crab |

Chili crab is a seafood that can be widely found at stalls or restaurant. Despite its name, chili crab is not a very spicy dish. Mud crabs are stir-fried in a sweet and savoury tomato and chili sauce. This dish is commonly served with breads.


Ikan Bakar means “burned fish” in Malay. The fish is marinated with spices and wrapped in a banana leaf before grilling on charcoal so that the leaf gets direct heat contact, rather than the fish itself.

| Char kuey teow |

Char kuey teow is a popular noodle dish. It is a delicious dish for a late-night snack. The flat rice noodles are stir-fried with egg, bean, soy, chili, and shrimps. Today, many different styles of Char kway teow exists in Malaysia.


Bandung is a favorite beverage in Malaysia. It consists of milk flavored with rose cordial syrup, giving a pink color. This drink is usually served during wedding receptions of Malaysian with other foods.

| Otak-otak |

Otak-otak is made by mixing fish paste with a mixture of spices. The mixture is wrapped in a banana leaf that has been softened by steaming, the grilled or steamed. It can be eaten as a snack or with bread or rice as part of a meal.
